Check out the interesting cases and downlands pages to see the new additions to the site.
"Everyone who has let us know their email address has had the newsletter sent out already," Dr Monks said.
So if you want to receive a regular newsletter from us make sure you let us know your email next time you're in.
"I also want to say thank you to my nurses for all their hard work," Dr Monks said. "Alana and Nikki are dedicated and caring, I couldn't ask for a better team and I know all my patients and clients feel the same way."

15 January 2008 - Welcome to 2008!
"From everyone at Brisbane Bird and Exotics Veterinary Service - Happy New Year and all the best for 2008!", Dr Monks said. "We're going to make it a great 2008, Alana, Nikki and I will be giving our patients the best care available in Brisbane."
In the last few months BBEVS has invested in a lot of new diagnostic equipment to make sure they get the right diagnosis as quickly as possible.
"In addition to the big x-ray machine on site we now have a mobile x-ray unit in our dedicated avian and exotics operating theatre." Alana said. "We can now take an x-ray without moving the patient, meaning that the anaesthetic time is reduced which can be life saving with critical patients".
“That’s in addition to the ventilator made just for avian and exotics, a new anaesthetic machine and the endoscope set up”, Nikki added.
But the operating theatre isn’t the only place where BBEVS has invested in getting the right equipment to take the best care of the patients, the laboratory and the ward has also seen new additions. Blood samples can now be processed in house meaning that the results are available within minutes, not days, dramatically improving diagnostics and making sure your pet receives the right treatment.
“In the ward we now have a critical care unit to ensure the critical patents and animals that have just come out of surgery get the care they need and deserve. That is in addition to the new reptile cages that have been set up in a dedicated ward, again to make sure they get everything they need,” Dr Monks said.
27 December - Welcome Nikki!
We are very excited to be taking on an addittional nurse at BBEVS.
Nikki is a qualified Certificate IV (diploma) nurse and will be joining us in mid-January. She has been working in a busy
avian and exotics practice in New Zealand for the last 3 years.
We look forward to having Nikki on our team. Make certain to say hi!

1 October 2007 - We are One!
Happy Birthday to BBEVS! Thanks to everyone for your support, the first year of a business is always a little nerve racking
but we have received great support from our clients and have met some truly wonderful pets.
BBEVS will continue to grow, in the next few months we'll have 2 full time nurses and we are recruiting some superb vets
with the right expertise to ensure that we can provide consistent quality care for all our patients! Look for more updates
as we get people on board.
18 August 2007 - Introducing Alana!
Alana joined BBEVS at the beginning of March as a part time nurse but is now working full-time. Her responsibilities
include patient care, ordering, theatre nursing, and reception. She is a qualified Certificate 2 nurse, and has almost
completed Certificate 4 meaning that BBEVS patients are recieving the best care from our qualified staff.
On the pet front Alana has three rainbow lorikeets, one guinea pig and a budgie to keep her busy outside working hours in
addittion to drawing, netball and ebay!

21 February 2007 - New Care Sheets.
New care sheets for the owners of pet parrots are available from the links page of this site.
"Many people have been asking me about what to feed their pet and how to keep them in a fit and healthy condition", Dr Monks said.
Two new care sheets have therfore been written specifically for Brisbane Bird and Exotic Veterinary Service clients.
The first, on feeding, covers all the things you should do and not do, including warnings about some fruit and vegtables which
are toxic to birds. "Some fruit and vegatables, such as avocado, are extreamly toxic to birds and can result in death",
Dr Monks warned.
The second care sheet talks about the importance of regular health checks and is a must read for all pet bird owners.
27 December 2006 - Registered Specialist in Avian Medicine.
After many years of study and veterinary practice in Australia, Europe and America Dr Monks sat her Specialist exams
in the middle of 2006. The Australian Exams were sat on the Gold Coast and the European exams in Holland. After
consideration of her experience, training and exam results Dr Monks has been registered as a Specialist in Avian
Medicine, one of only five veterinarians in Australia to achieve this certification.
"Birds and exotic animals have always been my passion", Dr Monks said. "I'm thrilled to be working with the animals that
I love and to be able to practice the very best veterinary medicine as a result of my experience and training".
"Birds and other exotic pets should be cared for in the same way as a dog or a cat, with regular vet checks", Dr Monks said.
"The key to having a healthy bird or exotic pet is to ensure that you have the right husbandry and that any problems are
picked up early."
Brisbane Bird and Exotics Veterinary Service can be contacted on (07) 3420 6773.
14 December 2006 - Preventative Health.
Guinea pigs with sore teeth, cockatiels and budgies with ‘girl problems’ and septicaemic turtles – it’s all in a day’s work
for Dr Monks from Brisbane Bird and Exotics Veterinary Service. Since opening on the 2nd of October 2006 we have been
overwhelmed with the positive response from clients.
“More and more, people are choosing less traditional smaller pets,” says Dr Monks. “All owners want to look after sick
pets but it is even more important to have a preventative health program so that wellness is maintained before illness
and disease result. We cater for the pets that often drop between the cracks at dog and cat veterinary clinics.”
Dr Monks had to go overseas to get additional training, and has successfully passed 3 examinations (2 in birds and 1 in
exotic animals) in order to hone her skills with these species. On her return to Australia after a 3 year residency in the
UK she decided the best way to treat these animals was to open her own veterinary practice focused on bird and exotic
pets.
16 November 2006 - Sexing your new bird.
Brisbane Bird and Exotics Service can surgically sex your new bird or take some blood and send it to the laboratory for testing.
"Both procedures are common place today", Dr Monks says. "For those who are interested we can even record the operation on
DVD so you can take it home", she said. With the latest endoscopy equipment the procedure is quick and easy, contact us for more
information.
1 November 2006 - Our First Month.
Brisbane Bird and Exotics Service says a big thankyou to all of the clients and vets who made their way to see or talk to
Dr Monks in October. We're looking forward to continuing to provide quality care for all your birds, reptiles and other
pets into the future. Remember if you can carry it and its not dog or cat then Brisbane Bird and Exotics Veterinary
Service is for you!
15 October 2006 - Press Release - Birds and Exotic Pets only!
Brisbane’s only veterinary practice devoted to bird and exotic pets opened its doors last week. The new
practice “Brisbane Bird and Exotics Veterinary Service” provides quality care for birds and exotic pets including
reptiles, guinea pigs, rats, mice and fish – if you can carry it and it’s not a dog or cat then this is the vet practice
for you!
“Our first week was really busy, we even did surgeries on a galah and a guinea pig!” said Dr Deborah Monks, who
runs Brisbane Bird and Exotics Veterinary Service.
“We saw a lot of pets in our first week which just shows you how popular these animals are becoming with the
general public”, Deborah said. “In our first week we have treated feather plucking birds, cockatiels with ulcerated
eyes, fish with sores and even treated a cockatoo with ‘female problems’.”
Birds and exotic pets have specific requirements that differ to those of more traditional pets, and Brisbane Bird and
Exotics Veterinary Service caters for those special needs. They have 2 thermostatically controlled heated wards as
well as an operating theatre and consultation room. Birds and exotic pets will see only the best with radiography,
ultrasound and video endoscopy all available in-house to give patients quality care and treatment.
“We even offer a copy of the endoscopy procedures on DVD for the pet owners to see what I am seeing and to help
understand what their pet is going through” said Debbie.
Debbie has unique qualifications being one of five veterinarians in the world who have Fellowship of the Australian
College of Veterinary Scientists Avian Health Chapter, and is one of three veterinarians in Australia to have the British
Certificate of Zoological Medicine. Additionally, she is one of 25 people worldwide to be a Diplomate of the
European College of Avian Medicine and Surgery. To obtain these qualifications, she needed to complete a 3 year
training program in the United Kingdom.
Brisbane Bird and Exotics Veterinary Service opened on 2 October 2006.
