Mottly the Mottly Guinea Pig!

When we first saw Mottly – he rather suited his name!

He was a rescue case from the RSPCA and his new owner brought him to us to see what we could do for him.

Before coming to us he was on an array of treatments, including a new haircut which seemed to provided him with a little relief!

After a good check over and a few tests here at the clinic he was diagnosed with a deficiency of vitamin C. Additionally, his previous cocktail of treatments was dramatically reduced.

It is very important for guinea pigs to be fed a good quality Vitamin C supplement on a daily basis as they cannot store it in their bodies, just like humans, nor can their bodies produce it. It is required for a nice shiny coat and smooth skin, for proper development of growing, pregnant and sick or recovering animals and to aid in correct gut function and digestion.

Two weeks later he was much improved! He had gained 100grams, his coat was growing back and his skin was looking great! He had unfortunately developed a small ulcer on his right eye which required a series of eye drops. He was to continue with his anti-inflammatory and antibiotics for a little longer just to make sure we were on top of the problem!

Another two weeks on he has gained more weight, doing well at home and his eye was looking better. Still requiring bathing to remove build up of discharge everyday but the ulcer was much better. His medications have all stopped and he is returning to the healthy little guinea pig he once was!!
